One natural occurrence that has greatly affected man in recent times has been the volcanic eruptions of 2010 in Iceland. The Eyjafjallajokul as it is called released ashes into the skies of Europe on the 14th of April. This eruption caused a massive disruption in flights coming into and out of Europe with the closure of several airports. Several thousands of flights were reported to have been cancelled leaving millions of passengers stranded across the world.

Little did many know that the Eyjafjallajokul was an occurrence whose object was the first leg semifinal match between FC Barcelona of Spain and Inter Milan of Italy. The volcanic eruption made the former its target with the aim to wear them out and create an advantage for the home side. The first leg was scheduled in Italy and given the busy soccer calendar the match had to go ahead as planned. The constraints of time meant the visitors had to go by road to Milan, a journey that had psychological consequences of fatigue for the travelling team. The result was that Barcelona lost the match and was eliminated from the competition.

Eyjafjallajokul happened primarily for historical reasons. Its cause, the mover of the eruptions was however philosophical. The historical factor behind this event had already been fleshed out in the paper The Philosophy of the UEFA Champions League. The philosophical aspect had been thoroughly detailed in my book The Philosophy of the Cosmos.

According to The Philosophy of the Cosmos, the origins of the universe started when incorporeal entities called the abstracts imparted their force into some stuff of the material universe. The abstracts are spirit, soul, air, mind, consciousness, reason and ideas. The objects brought into existence are cosmic bodies, plants, animals and man. These constitute the real. There is also the material which are rocks, mountains etc. Therefore the cosmos is categorized into the abstract, the real and the material. These abstracts that caused the evolution and its objects continue to subsist in them.

In The Philosophy of the UEFA Champions League, those abstracts that still form part of the universe developed with man, specific traits or characteristics owing to certain circumstances in the past. For example the people of Ijebu Ode acquired the traits of intelligence, organization and commercial enterprise owing to centuries of maneuvering with non-military options for their survival. Those traits of intelligence have become fixed and permanent even when the people are no longer engaged in those activities that engendered the traits. The point where the activities lead to these traits is the metaphysic. This is where the traits begin to flow naturally continuing the generational transfer that those activities too, passed through.

In Europe’s premier club competition, the decades of existence of the European Cup represents the centuries of Ijebu Ode’s maneuvering for survival with non-military options while the UEFA Champions League is the fixed, permanent and irreversible period of the developed traits of intelligence and organization of the Ijebu Ode people. The introduction of the UEFA Champions League in 1992 is the metaphysic point of the European Cup era of 1956 to 1992.

For the UEFA Champions League the metaphysic formed is based on the historical antecedents of the participating leagues and clubs. It is based on historical precedence. This rule first started to take shape in 2000 when La liga leveled Serie A and Premier League for its 9th European silverware. In 2009 FC Barcelona won the UEFA Champions League. About 6 months later, the club had claimed all the trophies it competed for. Thus in 2010 Guardiola’s men set about the task of becoming the first club side to retain it. It was this objective of Barcelona that caused the Eyjafjallajokul to spew ashes into the skies. Eyjafjallajokul happened because of the message underlying the rule of precedence which for Barcelona reads Ye Cannot Be At Present What Thou Has Not Been in the Past. The import of this message is that Barcelona doesn’t have the pedigree to defend the cup. That only Real Madrid possessed such pedigree. Therefore only Madrid which boasts that pedigree in Europe could accomplish such a feat. Hence, the eruption of the volcano.

What Barcelona tried and failed to accomplish from 2010 to 2012 was what Real Madrid attempted and succeeded with from 2016 to 2018. Barcelona encountered obstacles not in Inter Milan and Chelsea who were merely the instruments of execution but in Real Madrid. The issue which the Roma victory and the emergence of Liverpool has brought to light is that the problems that Barcelona confronted from 2010 to 2012 and which caused the Eyjafjallajokul to create an advantage for Inter Milan is about to rear its ugly head once more. The fact is Liverpool and Barcelona are currently on five European titles apiece. Together with Bayern Munich, this trio constitutes three of the teams that have won five titles at the highest level in European football. Liverpool and Bayern Munich achieved trebles out of their quintuple in the European Cup era. Both of them had golden eras of club football that predate Barcelona’s.

The English and German clubs have a pedigree that Barcelona doesn’t possess and cannot boast of. Real Madrid, too, had its golden era at its inception that predates all the clubs. Barcelona’s problems in Europe are mainly with Liverpool and Bayern Munich. These are the obstacles to the Catalan’s success in Europe. The rule of precedence at the club level means Barcelona will lag Liverpool and Bayern Munich for its 6th European title. But, at the league level, the Serie A and Premier League are currently tied at 12 European silverwares apiece which means Juventus will be the first to achieve European glory, to be followed by Liverpool afterwards. However being in the position to win ahead of Liverpool, Juventus still faces formidable opposition from the reigning champions. This threat though has been put out with the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The case of Ronaldo suffices for how man could in a peculiar situation through sustained activity, acquire the metaphysic necessary for extraordinary accomplishments. Besides Real Madrid, the coming years is of importance to fans, administrators, players and coaches of PSG, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Manchester City and Juventus in the UEFA Champions League. It is important to clubs that are yearning for continental glory. The coming years, too, particularly the next three is of great importance to metaphysics and philosophy. Using the Champions League as laboratory, the course of the next three editions will help prove that metaphysics is a global phenomenon. That it exists in reality; that there are metaphysical forces in the universe; that the Eyjafjallajokul and Grimsvotn both occurred at the instigation of and as a consequence of communication between the metaphysic forces in the world; that both volcanic eruptions had Barcelona as their object; that the metaphysic forces of Champions League never wanted Barcelona to win the 2011 edition and; that the order of Juventus, Liverpool and to some extent Bayern Munich as victors of the Champions League that are all yet to kickoff, with FC Barcelona having to queue behind them before its next continental glory, will help substantiate the fact that the Eyjafjallajokul had the Catalan giants as its main target.

It came without warning. Many football analysts and supporters were totally taken by surprise. But by the time the matches were rounded up, some of the big teams in this year’s competition had been kicked out unexpectedly.

Real Madrid FC, Barcelona FC and Arsenal FC, clubs that are football giants in Europe had all lost out to teams that they were expected to beat.

When the champion’s league knockout stage draw paired Barcelona and Liverpool together, all expected an easy ride for the former. After all, they were the reigning champions, and were one of the top teams in Europe on current form.

But a two to one loss right on their home soil meant that they had to win by two unreplied goals in the return leg at Liverpool.

They could only manage to score a lone goal, however and that meant that they lost out on the away goals rule.

The Barcelona fans and many other football followers worldwide were stunned by this result.

Many had expected the Barca team to at least reach the finals of this season’s competition. They were one of the best teams around and had given very good displays all year round. Alas, however, they had lost to a smaller club by comparison.

Although Liverpool were the European champions in 2005, no one had expected them to cause a major upset by beating Barcelona, at least on paper.

After the match, some analysts attributed the shock defeat to the recent turmoil in the team. The scorer of the lone goal at Anfield, Eidur Gudjohnssen in a press interview after the match made comments that seemed to corroborate the fact that all was not well with the team, as was being widely speculated.

Now, the Barca team can only realistically hope to aim for the Spanish league title and the King’s cup.

They still have a good shot at winning, as they are still on top of the la liga, ahead of second placed Sevilla on goals difference.

The PFA Player of the Year Awards are almost upon us. In a season that has seen the always competitive Championship at its most unpredictable, predicting its Team of the Season is far from straightforward; nevertheless, having assessed the contenders, I shall attempt to pick out and justify a worthy eleven.

Goalkeeper: Artur Boruc (Bournemouth)

The ‘holy goalie’ will be praying his excellent form continues, as the Cherries close in on a first ever promotion to the top flight. The former Celtic custodian has had a very consistent season, marginally edging out the miserly Keiren Westwood (Sheffield Wednesday) and Middlesbrough’s impressive collection of solid stoppers.

Right back: Simon Francis (Bournemouth)

We stay on the South Coast for our right-back, with Simon Francis an integral part of Bournemouth’s play – both defensively and offensively. His link-up with winger Matt Ritchie has caused no end of trouble for opposing teams all season long. Losing out to Francis for the position is Steven Whittaker (Norwich City) who, similarly, offers as much going forward as in defence.

Centre backs: Tom Lees (Sheffield Wednesday) and Tommy Elphick (Bournemouth)

Two Toms at the back, with Lees’ defensive ability appreciated by Wednesdayites certainly ready to overlook his Leeds past. The much-improved Elphick pips club colleague and captain Steve Cook, while there’s an honourable mention for Ben Gibson, youngest member of Middlesbrough’s stingy backline.

Left back: George Friend (Middlesbrough)

Mirroring Francis on the right, Friend’s forward forays have been a crucial element in Middlesbrough’s play this year. At the same time, his defensive work has been just as one would expect from the meanest defence in the league. Friend pinches the slot just ahead of Bournemouth’s Charlie Daniels.

Right midfield/wing: Matt Ritchie (Bournemouth)

Our fourth Cherry is the linking livewire Ritchie, who tops the table for goal assists this season and has hit double figures for his own goal tally to boot. His partnership with Francis has been a feature of Bournemouth’s best work all season. Team-mate Marc Pugh is the player to miss out in favour of the recent Scottish cap.

Centre midfield: Will Hughes (Derby) and Grant Leadbitter (Middlesbrough)

The almost impossible task of selecting only two players from a plethora of worthy contenders sees Derby’s precocious talent Hughes link up with the ever-dependable Leadbitter from Boro. Hughes, whose maturity in possession and eye for a pass belie his tender years, will surely not remain a Championship player for long, irrespective of his team’s ultimate destiny this season. He grabs the creative central position ahead of the creative Alan Judge, who has enjoyed an excellent season at Brentford. The grafting and effective Leadbitter has kept Boro ticking, and provides the perfect complement to Hughes, marginally edging out Harry Arter (Bournemouth) and Norwich’s long-shot specialist Bradley Johnson. An honourable mention is reserved for the much-improved Toumani Diagouraga, Judge’s defensive midfield team-mate for the Bees.

Left mid-field/wing/attack: Patrick Bamford (Middlesbrough)

Almost the go-to man for Middlesbrough this season in attack, Bamford’s goals have been frequent and priceless, with the occasionally sensational strike thrown in. Middlesbrough will be hoping to keep hold of the Chelsea loanee, but will probably need to be playing Premier League football next season in order to do so.

Strikers: Callum Wilson (Bournemouth) and Troy Deeney (Watford)

Fifth of a quintet of Cherries, Wilson has proved a more than adequate replacement for last season’s top scorer, Lewis Grabban. Despite his searing pace and intelligent link-up play, his hatful of goals still falls some way short of league top scorer Daryl Murphy, Ipswich’s target man, who may consider himself somewhat unfortunate to miss out on a place in the eleven. The same could be said of the Derby talisman Chris Martin, for whom injury at a crucial time limited his impact on the goalscoring charts, as well as his team’s fortunes. Nevertheless, the final place in the team is awarded to the slightly more prolific of Watford’s unstoppable front line: Troy Deeney. Fast becoming a complete centre-forward, Deeney’s sharpness, aerial strength and finishing ability see him sneak in ahead of Murphy, Martin, and his almost equally prolific Hornet team-mate, Odion Ighalo.

To recap, then, my team is:

Boruc (Bournemouth), Francis (Bournemouth), Lees (Sheffield Wednesday), Elphick (Bournemouth), Friend (Middlesbrough), Ritchie (Bournemouth), Hughes (Derby County), Leadbitter (Middlesbrough), Bamford (Middlesbrough), Wilson (Bournemouth), Deeney (Watford)

The 17-time champion of the Italian Serie A, the AC Milan, lost again another important game in the Italian Serie A after, being defeated for team Sampdoria 2-1 on Sunday. With this defeat, AC Milan is getting away from the top team Inter Milan, who has now 60 points. Currently AC Milan has 48 points, 12 points away from Inter and 5 points away from the second place Juventus, which has 53 points. Also, with this result, some critics’ doubt that AC Milan could even battle for the Scudetto this season, but Coach Ancelotti still has a hope for his team.

During these past two weeks, the results of AC Milan haven’t been positive; first losing against Inter Milan 2-1 on week 24 of the season, then exiting the UEFA Cup in the Round of 32 against Werder Bremen with an overall score of 3-3 (with the away goal rule in favour of the German squad) and now losing against the 14th place Sampdoria 2-1.

As well, there’s some rumours about that Carlo Ancelotti is in risk of getting replaced at the end of the season; however, the owner of the AC Milan franchise, Silvio Berlusconi, has expressed that the job of Ancelotti is safe for now, especially since he knows that the manager is dealing with injuries in some key players and as a result the positive outcomes have not been easy to accomplish.

Nevertheless, Carlo Ancelotti is sure that his team will get better these following weeks as he expects that players like Kaka, Ronaldiho and some others will come back to the field.

«It is no doubt a difficult moment, but I am sure that things will get better soon. As soon as we recover our injured players and get a chance to train adequately, we will get back on track. I think it will take a couple of weeks but you will soon see a very different side,» stated Ancelotti.

Another concern for the AC Milan is the departure of the English midfielder David Beckham, who is leaving on March 9th to reunite with his team, the LA Galaxy. The retention of the midfielder has been a constant drama these past weeks in Italy, due to the fact that he was becoming an important part of the AC Milan late success and they want him to stay, however LA Galaxy did not want to make any negotiations over his player and now the superstar Beckham has to leave to comply his contract with the MLS team.

Despite all these difficulties, AC Milan players, Coach Ancelotti and the franchise are hoping that things will get better, so they can achieve their only and last objective, which is obtaining the third place of the standings at the end of the season to get a berth in the Champions League.

The next game of AC Milan in the Italian Serie A will be against Atalanta on Sunday March, 8th at San Siro and the hopes are set in having several injured players back in the field. This also will be a special day as this will be David Beckham’s last game with the «Rossoneri».
