Manchester United is a term which is known to football fans all over the world. It is a football club, an English football club to be precise. It is based on Old Tafford, United Kingdom. They are also known as the «Red Devils» of England. It is one of the most famous and popular football club with more than 300 million supporters all over the world. 300 million can be roughly estimated as 5% of the total population! They are the most successful and influential club and ever since the 1990s they are rumored to be the richest clubs in existence. The club had a humble beginning during the initial stages and was even closed down on number of occasions due to mounting debts.

Being initially called the Newton Health Y&R, it was said to be sponsored by a health club. Five European trophies have been credited to them ever since the club came into existence. This included one international cup, one European super cup, two European champion’s cup, one cup winner cup. They were bestowed with 12 domestic cups and 16 premier league cups too. They were also relevant in finding and establishing Europe’s G-14 football club. Malcolm Glazer who was an American businessman had invested on Manchester United in 2005. He had paid a staggering $1.47 billion just for a 28.7% share on the team. It was after a year long battle in the courts that he could ultimately get his hands on the team.

He had faced difficulties in claiming the club, due to the facts the takeover had made the club poorer by $850 million. Also he being a businessman, fans did not like the idea of a business man holding the reins of one of the most successful football clubs of the world. They had hoped for someone who had adequate knowledge about the sport to invest on the club. Escalating prices of the tickets also angered the fans as the club often received hefty sums from advertisements and sponsorship dealings. A vast majority of the fans even went to the extent of not renewing their season tickets for the forth coming matches of the Manchester United. Songs disrespecting Glazer and his sons can still be heard on many matches played by Manchester United.

Fans worldwide have been largely discontent by the takeover of the club by Malcolm Glazer. He had played significantly no role in the upcoming of the football club. His children were the ones who enjoyed director posts of the club for sometime. Despite these shortcomings, the club has surged forward under his guidance. He had spent quite large sums of money on the club and even more in roping the world’s best football players into the club. The club had won two major cups in 2008 itself, the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League. It is to be noted that the Glazer group does not interfere with the daily business dealings of Manchester united and have left such activities to David Gill, the chief executive of Manchester united. Steep increase in the prices of the tickets had prompted many faithful followers to stay away from the club matches.

Premiership

Birmingham City vs Arsenal

Arsenal would be looking to bounce back from 2 disappointing results by winning at Birmingham to maintain their 5 point gap or even increase their lead at the top.

Birmingham would feel that if they could get a draw at the Emirates than they can either get the same result or provide a shock against the league leaders but it would not be easy.

Arsenal should win this but with some difficulty.

Liverpool Vs Middlesboro

You never know what you are going to get from Liverpool and especially from their manager. The 1 thing you do know you are not going to get is the same side that beat Inter Milan on Tuesday. Middlesboro have not lost a game this year and would like to keep that run going but if Liverpool play to their full potential they should win. It would not surprise me if this ends in a draw but I really do expect Liverpool to with this game.

Newcastle United Vs Manchester United

Newcastle have not won under Kevin Keegan and after tomorrow, I expect that record to continue as anything other than a Manchester United victory would be a total surprise.

They would not lose 6-0 as they did at Old Trafford but I still expect them to lose against a team that would be buoyant after decent results against Arsenal and Lyon in the champion’s league.

The 1 saving grace for Newcastle is that Manchester United do not always play well immediately after a champions league tie but unfortunately Newcastle do not have the desired quality to trouble the champions.They did get an improbable draw against Manchester United last season and Keegan always wants to beat Ferguson so you never know.

Carling Cup Final

Chelsea Vs Tottenham Hotspurs

Juande Ramos is a past master in winning cup finals but I cannot see them defeating Chelsea on Sunday bearing in mind they played 2 days after Chelsea did in the midweek and also how very organised Chelsea are defensively.

If Ledley King plays then Spurs would stand a slight chance as he provides so much defensive prowess to them but if he does not then I do not give them a chance.

Spurs have all the flair and attacking prowess but Chelsea are a very hard nut to crack and Tottenham have to score 1st to stand any chance.

I would like to see Spurs win the cup but I just cannot see past Chelsea winning it.

SerieA

Roma Vs Fiorentina

This is the game of the weekend in Italy and pits 2 of the most attractive teams against each other.

Roma managed to defeat Real Madrid in the champions league on Tuesday and that would have boosted their confidence after some shaky results whilst Fiorentina defeated Rosenborg to go through to the next phase of the UEFA cup just last night.

The fact that Fiorentina played 2 days after and do not exactly have a very good away record makes me opt firmly towards Roma.

Sampdoria Vs Inter Milan

Inter would be looking to put their 1st defeat in 5 months against Liverpool firmly behind them and I strongly fancy them to beat Sampdoria at Genoa.

Sampdoria, inspired by Antonio Cassano did well to defeat city rivals, Genoa last weekend but I do not see them repeating the trick against Inter unless Inter decide to implode by having a man sent off early again.

Inter do have problems at the back though with Ivan Cordoba ruled out for the season joining Walter Samuel as casualties for the season.

Reginna Vs Juventus

Juventus are coming off 2 excellent results and would be full of confidence when they face relegation threatened Reginna on Saturday evening knowing fully well that a victory would catapult them to 2nd albeit for a few hours.

This would not be easy as Juventus have shown this season that they tend not to win games you fully expect them to and have drawn a lot of games they were expected to win. But I do think they would win this game but not very comfortably.

Milan Vs Palermo

Like Liverpool, you never know what you are going to get and this is not an easy game to call. You would think Milan should win this game but they have drawn far too many home games to consider any game a home banker.

Pato and Kaka are back so that should help and they would also be buoyed by their midweek performance at Arsenal.

I expect a very narrow victory for the Rossoneri.

La Liga

Sevilla Vs Zaragoza

Sevilla are quite formidable at home and Zaragoza are inconsistent everywhere so I would expect Sevilla to win this game.

Barcelona Vs Levante

Barcelona looked like they are coming back into some semblance of form with a number of key players performing well against Celtic including Ronaldinho, Deco, Thierry Henry and most especially Lionel Messi.

Samuel Etoo is back as well and Levante, which is possibly the poorest team in La Liga this season do not have a prayer.

Real Madrid Vs Getafe

This is a local derby with the added spice of Real Madrid manager Bernd Schuster coming up against his former club and Getafe manager, Michael Laudrup coming up against a side he graced so well as a player.

Real were unlucky to be defeated at Roma and have a 100% home record in la Liga this season. They also have the additional boost of Robinho returning to the fold so I fully expect them to be too strong for a Getafe side that played yesterday in Uefa Cup defeating AEK Athens 3-0.

Chelsea FC again at the weekend proved their superiority over their counterpart Arsenal FC; thanks to the brace by their talisman, Didier Drogba. The match was tagged a grudges match by Arsenal fans having lost at home 0-3 to us in the first round of the season.

Arsenal provoked us last season by beating us 2-1 in the first round of the season at Stamford Bridge courtesy of 2 great goals by Fabregas. Ever since they have lost 3 straight games against us- they lost 1-4 at Emirates stadium in the second half of last season, 0-3 again in the first half of this season and the 0-2 loss yesterday. We beat them home and away this season.

The match had started on a good note for them, with the boys attacking seriously and showing some flair. They had revenge at the back of their mind to prove to the world that their loss to us in the first half was by error. But before the 10th minute of the first half the pendulum of victory was already swinging in our direction; Didier Drogba had netted the first goal thereby putting the Arsenal players under intense pressure The first half ended 1 goal in our favour, but the second half saw more fire works by the visiting team.

Our goal keeper Petr Cech proved too had a nut to crack; cordoned off the post making it practically impossible for the Arsene Wenger boys to score. The more they tried to equalize the farther the match got beyond them. And before anyone could say Jack Robinson, Didier Drogba had added a second goal for Chelsea thereby sealing the victory for us. Arsenal were lucky that his free kick hit the cross bar for what would have made it a hat trick for Drogba. The free kick was professionally taken and of course Arsenal’s goal stood rooted to the ground as the watched the ball return after hitting the cross bar.

By his performance at the weekend Drogba has shown that we missed him while he was away on national assignment during the Nations’ cup tournament in Angola. Wayne Rooney gave him a gap on the scorers’ list because of his days of absence from the league, but he has announced his comeback by scoring in his last 2 games. He may catch up again and possibly overtake Rooney to get the top scorer award. Chelsea is really making tremendous progress as far as the contest to this year’s premier league title is concerned; and now that they are playing more compact football, I believe they can win the league again and stop Manchester United from getting the title for the fourth time in a roll.

The English football club Chelsea FC which is founded in the year 1905 is one of the most feared football clubs by the opposition for the past decade. Even though they do not boast the trophy cabinet along the likes of other English clubs such as that of Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool who were the traditional top flight English clubs, Chelsea football club have thrown these teams out from their throne to become the champions during the recent years. The golden period of the English football club have started since the Russian Oligarch Roman Abramovich took over the club in 2003 and had invested millions to take the club to the new heights.

Several high profile signings took place and high profile managers were brought who helped the club to reach the level it is now. It was the arrival of the young charismatic and the talismanic manager Jose Mourinho to the club hierarchy that had revolutionized the Chelsea football club as well as the English Football. Trophies started flowing in since the Portuguese manager took the helm of the club and Chelsea had conquered back to back English Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006 dethroning Manchester United and Arsenal.

Before leaving the club on mutual consent after falling out with the billionaire club owner, Jose Mourinho has turned Chelsea as the powerhouse of English as well as European Football. Chelsea has won a total of four premier league titles, four league cups, four community shields and seven FA cups on the English front.

However on the European front, overall the club has achieved one UEFA Super Cup, One UEFA Champions League and two of the UEFA Intercontinental Cup, otherwise called as UEFA Cup Winners Cup. Chelsea play its home games wearing the blue jersey with the white socks and away games with shirt colors varying from yellow, all white, black and other shades.
