Chelsea’s Most Important Players Against Liverpool

Liverpool are known to be a great force when it comes to matches against other Big 4 teams, Statistically speaking Chelsea have the edge in every aspect whether it’s the points or goals scores but Kenny Daglish could have something else in mind when he comes to Stamford. Here is a list of players that could serve to be decisive depending on how they perform in the match.

Fernando Torres – El-Nino failed to score last season against his former club with Ancelotti in charge and this will be his second chance to face former team-mates. Torres has shown signs of his possible return and will need to work his magic if he is wants to ensure his place as Chelsea’s first striker when Didier Drogba returns.

Jose Bosingwa will have a tough match as he will be required to attack against a performing right back like Jose Enrique and defend from Liverpool’s most versatile and fastest forward Luis Suarez. Unfortunately for Bosingwa he is known to lack defensively and this might cause him to be replaced by Ivanovic in the case that Andre Villas Boas decides to play it safe.

David Luiz – the Brazilian international is a possible candidate alongside John Terry and will be required to partner successfully with the Blues captain against a duo of Suarez and Carroll. Luiz is known for his decisive moments but can also prove to be disastrous and this can be seen in the last few matches where he gave away two penalties.

Daniel Sturridge – the young English forward is one of the latest Chelsea starts and will definitely be used by Boas if he plans on matching Liverpool’s pace. Kenny Daglish will surely aim for a win and this means that Chelsea need to be quick to counter-attack and this is where Daniel comes in.

John Terry – The Blues captain needs to get his priorities straight if he plans to stay captain for long, John was recently dismissed from England’s match against Spain and could possibly lose a spot if he doesn’t prepare himself mentally and physically against Liverpool. Although that is nearly impossible with the English media harassing him at every instance due to the QPR incident he needs to get it done.

Juan Mata – Chelsea’s best deal this season has stolen veteran Malouda’s spot and earned it well, the Spaniard showed his value by successfully scoring several decisive goals for Chelsea and creating many others. His speed and creativity will be needed against Liverpool’s defenders especially the likes of Jamie Carragher and Glenn Johnson.

Frank Lampard – Nominated «man of the match» four times so far Super frank will need to control the midfield alongside Ramires and contribute with his long and through passes to assist the strikers. Lampard has been under the spot light recently and he is not ready to be benched yet.

Next Stop Premier League?

With the World Cup now having been and gone we could have expected an influx of summer performers to the Premier League clubs as has happened following recent World Cups and European Championships. This summer though, movement has been slow. The highest profile move to a Premier League club thus far was the recent announcement that Chelsea’s Joe Cole is transferring to Liverpool. Whilst Cole fits the criteria of a World Cup performer this move was likely to have been initiated before the World Cup and based on reputation rather than World Cup matches.

The financial climate of the Premier League has changed considerably with public records of large leveraged debt at Manchester United and Liverpool, Arsenal have never been traditional big spenders under manager Arsene Wenger and the situation at Chelsea is uncertain but it is clear that Roman Abramovich has slowed his spending in the last two seasons. This leaves Manchester city has the obvious candidates to spend big on World Cup stars whilst Spurs may want to consolidate there new standing as a top four side with some new faces.

With many of the fancied players (Kaka, Messi, Drogba, Rooney, Ronaldo) relatively under performing this summer the World Cup the hottest property is Germany’s Mesut Ozil. The speedy 21 year old is contracted to Bundesliga side Werder Bremen. With Michael Ballack gone from the Chelsea midfield they may see his replacement at International level this summer as the man to fill the gap at Stamford Bridge, however Chelsea interest in a player is likely to stir attention at Manchester City who have so far spent big money on Spain’s David Silva, Germany’s Jerome Boateng and Ivory Coasts Yaya Toure. However Ozil is likely to attract interest from mainland Europe too. Whilst he may not fit into the Barcelona midfield with their interest firmly on Fabregas he may be a target for fellow giants Real Madrid or closer to home Bayern Munich.

Uruguay surprised many this summer with the stand out performers being strikers Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan. Forlan is tried and tested in the Premier League when he found life tough to cope with at Manchester United scoring just 17 goals in near 100 appearances, he may get a second chance with another club if he can be tempted to leave the Spanish league that seems to suit his style of play. Suarez netted a phenomenal 49 goals for Dutch side Ajax and should Ajax manager Martin Jol make the rumoured switch to Fulham then don’t be surprised to see his star striker follow him to Craven Cottage.

World Cup’s gone by have been an opportunity for African players to showcase their talents to the watching football world, however this time around with the exception of Ghana, African performances were subdued so a minority of players are likely to have stirred Premier League interest. Of course, a large majority of Ghana’s squad already feature in European leagues so are likely to carry the inflated price tags that has Premier League chairman running scared of.

So to conclude, a slow start to the transfer window (with the obvious exception of Manchester City) and don’t expect things to change too quickly, it is likely to be a pre-season of consolidation and looking within teams own youth ranks rather than a vast period of recruitment.

Premier League Match Time: Everton Vs Liverpool

One of the mouth watering prospects in store for football fans, when the Premier League returns after an International break, is a Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool.

Goodison Park will be the venue of a lunch-time kick off on Sunday in what promises to be an explosive match between two sides looking to prove themselves, after indifferent starts to their Premiership campaigns.

Coincidentally, both teams languishing near the bottom of the table, have six points each after seven matches. With new ownership looming for the Reds, Roy Hodgson will be keen to underline his managerial skills with a win. Especially after fans chanted for his removal in the Reds’ 2-1 home loss to Blackpool.

In some bad news for Liverpool (other than the off-field wrangles at Anfield), Dirk Kuyt is sidelined ahead of Sunday’s game, owing to an injury sustained by the striker in Holland’s Euro qualifier with Sweden on Tuesday, a match that the Dutch won convincingly. It could be a month before Kuyt returns to action.

But Hodgson will take cheer from Torres’ return to the team after the Spanish striker showed signs of recovery from an abductor strain.

Steven Gerrard, as ever, will the key man, and Hodgson will look for an inspired performance from the England midfielder in what is a must-win for the Anfield squad.

Everton on their part have injury worries too, with the sidelining of Victor Anichebe, Steven Pienaar, Louis Saha and Jack Rodwell. Manager David Moyes will hope that home advantage inspires the Blues to bank three points from the game, and move up the points table.

The Toffees will look to Tim Cahill to provide the momentum, even as the Reds are set to miss the services of Daniel Agger, Fabio Aurelio and Paul Konchesky due to injury.

The following players were in Everton starting eleven in their 2-0 win against Birmingham, on October 2: Tim Howard, Phil Neville, Sylvain Distin, Philip Jagielka, Leighton Baines, Seamus Coleman, Marouane Fellaini, Mikel Arteta, Leon Osman, Tim Cahill, Yakubu.

The substitutes for the match were: Barkley, Jermaine Bedford, Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, John Heitinga, Magaye Gueye, Tony Hibbert, Jan Mucha.

Liverpool included the following players in their last league match against Blackpool, a match that the Reds lost 2-1: Jose Manuel (Pepe) Reina, Glen Johnson, Sotiros Kyrgiakos, Martin Skrtel, Jamie Carragher, Christian Poulsen, Raul Meireles, Dirk Kuyt, Steven Gerrard, Joe Cole, Fernando Torres.

The substitutes were: Milan Jovanovic, Lucas, David Ngog, Jay Spearing, Martin Kelly, Maxi Rodriguez, Brad Jones.

Liverpool Completes Rodriguez Deal

Liverpool have successfully signed Maxi Rodriguez from Atletico Madrid on a free transfer. Rodriguez has signed a three-and-a-half year contract with the club. He may make his debut for Liverpool in the weekend game against Stoke. This is Rafa Benitez’s first signing in this transfer window. He has already sold Andriy Voronin and Andrea Dossena.

Liverpool FC’s performance in this season is worst among the so called «top four» clubs. They are out from the champions league, they are out from Carling cup and most recently they are out from FA cup. Seeing the current position and performance one can easily think of Liverpool not finishing in top four this season in the premier league, so they can be out from next year’s Champions league also.

Why so many problems to a club who were second in the league last season? In fact their performance was very good in the premier league last season. Some snapshots of their performance are as below:

o Liverpool lost only two matches in the premier league in 2008-09 season.

o They got double (won both home and away games) against Manchester United (league winners) and Chelsea.

o They were on the top of league for more than six months.

o Liverpool won 4-0 against Real Madrid in Champions league.

Now in this season Liverpool have not shown any sign of being a threat to the league winners. Seeing Manchester City’s and Spurs’ performances it will be very difficult for Liverpool to finish in top four.

The club’s problems are not only on the field but also off the field. They are in huge debt, team boss Rafa Benitez has already said that they may sale Torres and Gerrard for the future of the club. Team’s ace striker Fernando Torres is also very much concerned about the team’s bad performance this season and he has told the owners to buy some quality players. He said «If we want to compete with United and Chelsea we need a much, much more complete squad. We need more genuinely first-class players and we can’t let our best players leave.»

The main reason behind Liverpool’s bad run in this season can be the absence of Xabi Alonso. Liverpool have sold their midfielder Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid during the summer transfer window. They bring Alberto Aquilani for the Spanish Alonso.

Liverpool’s recent game against Reading has added a lot to Liverpool’s problems list. Liverpool lost the game 2-1 in extra time, moreover they lost three first team players in this game. Striker Fernando Torres will be out from action for six weeks, while Steven Gerrard will be sidelined for two and Yossi Benayoun is set to miss a month.

Tommy Smith – Liverpool FC Legend

Tommy Smith was born in Liverpool in 1945 and had a reputation as a real ‘hard man’ a defender who determined, powerful and who’s raw aggression in the tackle quickly earned him a reputation, but he could also play as well, making over 600 appearances for the club he supported as a boy. He was a key player during the 1960’s and 70’s as Liverpool rose from second division mediocrity to dominate the English game.

Smith joined Liverpool as an apprentice in 1960 at the age of fifteen and he was soon playing in the reserve team, his determination in the reserves saw him make his debut for the first team during the 1962-63 season in a 5-1 victory over Birmingham, but it wasn’t until 1965 that Smith began to play regularly, and during this season that he was instrumental in Liverpool’s FA Cup winning team that beat Leeds United.

By the 1965-66 season Smith had cemented his place in the first team as Liverpool went onto win the league title, which would be the first of his four titles with the Reds. Despite his reputation as a hard man, Smith was only ever sent off once during a match and that was for swearing at the referee and not for one of his infamous tackles.

After a period of re-building under manager Bill Shankly in 1970 which saw numerous new players arrive at Anfield, Smith was given the Liverpool captaincy and despite losing the FA Cup final to Arsenal in 1971, success wasn’t far away, and in the 1972-73 season he became the first Liverpool captain to lift a European trophy as they won the UEFA Cup as well as regaining the League title.

Six months later however, following a disagreement with manager Bill Shankly, Smith was stripped of the Liverpool captaincy and dropped from the team, to make matters worse, arch rival Emlyn Hughes was installed as the new club captain. After the differences were settled, and despite rumours that he wanted a transfer away from the club, Smith regained his place in the team, now playing at full back, rather than his favoured central defensive position.

He went onto to win the 1974 FA Cup final against Newcastle, and two more League titles in 1976 and 1977, which was probably Liverpool’s most memorable season. After winning the League title, Liverpool looked set to achieve an unprecedented ‘treble’ but narrowly missed out after losing the FA Cup final 2-1 to Manchester United.

Just days after losing the FA Cup final, came a unforgettable night in Rome as Liverpool faced German side Borussia Monchengladbach in the European cup final, an injury to Phil Thompson meant that Smith started the game and he scored the second goal in the 3-1 victory, that saw Liverpool win their first European cup.

One final season at Anfield saw Tommy Smith bring down the curtain on his Liverpool career in 1978, after 638 appearances and 48 goals for the club, nick-named the Anfield-Iron, after his hard man reputation, he will never be forgotten.
